As the seasons change, so do our emotions. For those who have experienced loss, the transition from winter to summer can bring unexpected waves of grief. While the world outside bursts into life with warmth and light, grief doesn’t follow the seasons—it lingers, weaving itself into our lives in ways that aren’t always predictable.
I know this firsthand. The shift from winter to summer has always been a powerful trigger for me. While others celebrate the sunshine, I’ve often found myself feeling the weight of absence even more deeply. The stillness of winter has a way of holding grief gently, allowing us time to reflect and cocoon ourselves in rest. But as the world awakens in spring and moves into summer’s vibrancy, I’ve sometimes felt a jarring contrast—like life is surging ahead, while part of me is still standing in the quiet.
Why the Changing Seasons Can Be Difficult for Those Grieving
🌿 The Energy Shift Feels Overwhelming – Winter is naturally a season of introspection and stillness, offering a quiet space for reflection. As summer arrives, bringing social gatherings, longer days, and a fast-paced energy, it can feel disorienting when grief still lingers.
☀️ Memories of Shared Summers – The warmth and activity of summer may stir up memories of time spent with a loved one—walks in the sun, vacations, laughter-filled evenings. These memories, while beautiful, can also highlight their absence.
💛 The Expectation to Feel "Better" – Society often associates summer with happiness and renewal. When you’re grieving, this expectation can feel isolating. Others may assume that sunshine and fresh air will "lift your spirits," but grief doesn’t work on a seasonal timeline.
🌬 The Feeling of Life Moving Forward Without Them – Just as nature shifts from dormancy to vibrancy, the world around us moves forward. This can be a painful reminder that life continues—even when we deeply miss someone who is no longer physically here.
The Summer Weekends I Miss the Most
Some of my most cherished memories are the summer weekends I spent with my loved one.
Long, lazy Saturdays by the pool. The laughter when my loved one was throwing my kids in the pool. The dogs running playing. The simple joy of sharing those moments, away from the chaos of life, just being together.
Now, summer weekends feel different. The pool is still there, the sun still shines, but something is missing. That presence, that laughter, that deep sense of belonging. The world moves forward, but my heart still aches for those moments.
The Sign from Spirit That Changed Everything
Last summer, not long after their passing, I returned to the pool. It felt strange to be there alone. The air was warm, the water was still, and yet, all I could feel was absence.
As I sat near the edge, lost in thought, something caught my eye—a little frog was swimming in the pool and needed help. Frogs hold special meaning for me and my loved one because it is an acronym for Fully Rely On God.
It was a reminder. A message from the other side.
"I’m still here with you."
In that moment, I knew—our loved ones don’t leave us. They find ways to reach us, to remind us that even though seasons change, their love remains constant.
What Spirit Has Taught Me: They Want Us to Live Fully
One of the most consistent messages I’ve received through my work as a medium is that our loved ones in spirit want us to live.
So often, I have connected with spirits who don’t want their loved ones to stay stuck in grief. They don’t want us to feel guilty for experiencing joy or moving forward. They want us to laugh, to explore, to fully embrace life—not just for ourselves, but for them too.
Every time I sense my loved one’s presence, I feel their encouragement. “Enjoy summer, Watch the sunset. Feel the warmth on your skin. Keep living.”
It’s not about moving on—it’s about carrying their love forward, allowing their spirit to be woven into the moments we create.
How Mediumship & Spirituality Can Help During Seasonal Shifts
💫 Signs from Spirit Are Everywhere – Spirit often communicates through signs—feathers, butterflies, song lyrics, or, in my case, a fishing bobber. If you feel your loved one’s presence in these moments, trust it.
🔮 Connecting Through Mediumship – A session with a medium can bring comfort and validation, offering evidence that your loved one is still with you.
🌙 Sacred Rituals Can Honor Their Memory – Lighting a candle, journaling, or setting up a small altar with items that remind you of them can help you feel connected.
🌿 Nature Holds Spiritual Messages – Taking mindful walks, breathing in the fresh air, and being open to signs from spirit in nature can bring peace.
🧘♀️ Energy Healing Supports Emotional Balance – Distance Reiki, meditation, or even placing a hand on your heart and taking deep breaths can help process emotions as the seasons shift.
Ways to Cope with Seasonal Grief
☀️ Create a Summer Ritual – Dedicate a new tradition to your loved one—visit their favorite place, plant a flower in their honor, or take a moment at sunset to send them love.
💛 Allow Yourself to Feel Without Judgment – If summer brings grief, let it. There is no timeline for healing, and it’s okay to move at your own pace.
🌿 Surround Yourself with Support – Whether it’s friends, a grief group, or a trusted spiritual guide, sharing your feelings can lighten the emotional weight.
🌬 Talk to Them – You don’t have to stop including them in your life. Talk to your loved one in spirit, write them letters, or simply hold them in your heart.
✨ Trust That They Are With You – Your loved ones in spirit want you to live, love, and find joy. They walk beside you through every season.
