Learning to Feel Spirit: How Asking for a Hug from My Loved Ones Helped Me Develop Mediumship and My Grief

Learning to feel Spirit

One of the first things I ever did as I began developing my mediumship abilities was so simple and yet felt so incredibly hard at the time. My mentor had me ask my loved ones in Spirit to wrap me in a hug. She told me to lay down, do a quick body scan and ask for a hug.

That’s it. No candles, no complicated rituals. Just me, laying on my couch, or sometimes on the floor, heart wide open, whispering to my loved ones : “Can you come hug me?”

Honestly, I was not even sure if some of my loved ones in Spirit would want to hug me. They weren't always the affectionate type while in the physical.

At the time, I didn’t realize how important this practice would become, not just for my own healing, but for my spiritual growth. What I was really learning was how to feel the subtle energy of Spirit.

Feeling Spirit is a Skill That Grows with Time

At first I didn't notice much of anything, but as I started really quieting my mind and focusing on my body. I did notice differences happening. When I asked my brother, Cameron, to hug me, I would feel a tingling in my arm. But when I asked my Nana to come hug me … the feeling shifted. I felt a warmth around my forehead. I began to learn that each Spirit has a unique energetic signature.

I didn't realize it at the time, but I was building the muscle of clairsentience. This is the intuitive ability to feel and sense energy. Today this helps me in my mediumship readings, Spirit will use my signs with my loved ones to let me know who they are to you.

Try This Practice Yourself

If you’re grieving, developing your intuition, or just curious.. try this practice:

  1. Sit quietly and take a few slow breaths.

  2. Think of a loved one in Spirit. Say their name.

  3. Ask them: “ (Loved ones name) wrap me in a hug please”

  4. Pay attention to how your body feels. Any changes in pressure, emotion, warmth, or tingles?

Don’t judge what comes. Just notice. Over time, you’ll begin to recognize the energy of different Spirits. Journal it to help you keep track and notice patterns of your feelings.

Grief and Growth Can Coexist

Even now, as a professional evidential medium, I still use this practice. Sometimes, when I’m missing my brother or need reassurance, I stop and ask him for a hug. And he always shows up.

The Spirit world doesn’t ask us to be perfect. They ask us to feel, to open, to listen, and to trust what arises.

And sometimes, that starts with a hug.
